  Charles Birnbaum

Charles Birnbaum is a landscape architect, preservationist, and coordinator of the National Park Service Historic Landscape Initiative where he advocates and works with communities around the country to develop a preservationist philosophy regarding landscapes in the same way buildings are thought of as historic and worthy of preservation. In 1995, the American Association of Landscape Architects (ASLA) awarded the Initiative the President's Award and inducted Birnbaum as a Fellow of the Society the following year. Prior to serving the NPS, Birnbaum spent a decade in private practice with a focus on landscape preservation. His most recent project includes the on-line series, “Cultural Landscapes as Classrooms.” Additionally, he is editing Design with Culture for the University Press of Virginia; Preserving Modern Landscape Architecture I and II for Spacemaker Press; and Pioneers of American Landscape Design for McGraw Hill. Birnbaum served as a Loeb Fellow in 1998 at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design during which time he founded The Cultural Landscape Foundation. Currently, he is an instructor for the National Preservation Institute. Most recently, he was awarded the Rome Prize in Historic Preservation and spent the spring and summer of 2004 at the American Academy in Rome. . . . short bio
