  Dennis Carmichael

Award winning landscape architect Dennis Carmichael returns for his second lecture at Chautauqua following his first appearance with architect Paul Ostergaard in 2002 when they spoke of Chautauqua’s influence on their professional careers. Carmichael is a vice president and one of three landscape architecture principals in the Alexandria, Virginia office of EDAW, one of the world’s leading design firms, where his work seeks to make landscape visible, comprehensible and valuable to society as a whole. He is also president-elect of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).

Carmichael has always been concerned with connecting people to place and is a pioneer in the genre of narrative landscape, or landscape that tells a story. He has applied this philosophy to dozens of parks, plazas, streetscapes and work places to create places that reveal their unique ecology, culture, and history in a manner that the lay person can understand. Carmichael’s work in the urban designs of downtown centers has also invigorated several cities throughout the United States. Noteworthy projects under his direction include Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta; Sallie Mae Headquarters in Reston, Virginia; the West Main Street Arts District in Louisville, Kentucky, and the community of Celebration in Florida.

Dennis Carmichael is a graduate of Jamestown High School and a long-time visitor to Chautauqua. He designed the Discovery Garden adjacent to the Main Gate Welcome Center and the new garden next to the Oliver Archives Center.
