  George Walker

George Walker is director general emeritus of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO), a recognized leader in the field of international education founded in 1968. It is a non-profit, mission-driven foundation that works with more than 1,500 schools in 122 countries for approximately 200,000 students. IB programs cultivate internationalism and respect for other cultures, and students are taught to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged citizens who gain practical experience of being part of an international community.

Mr. Walker was appointed as director general of the IBO in 1999 following eight years as head of the International School of Geneva, Switzerland, the world’s oldest and largest international school with more than 3,000 students. He has been a visiting professor of education at the University of Bath, UK since 1997 where he was awarded the honorary degree of doctor of education. He has also been appointed OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) for his services to education. Mr. Walker studied chemistry at Oxford University, and music at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. He began his career in education as a science teacher and was then appointed lecturer in education at the University of York, UK. The author of many articles and books on physical chemistry and comprehensive education, his study of international education, To Educate the Nations was published in 2002 with a second volume published in 2004.
