  Dr. Melvin Levine

Dr. Melvin Levine is a Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University Of North Carolina School Of Medicine in Chapel Hill, NC. He is also the founder of All Kinds of Minds, a non-profit institute for the study of differences in learning. He serves as Co-Chairman of the Board of this Institute along with Charles Schwab. Levine is responsible for conducting research and training programs in the field of developmental disabilities. He also directs clinical programs for the evaluation of children and young adults with problematic learning, development, and/or behavioral adjustment.

For fourteen years, Levine served as Chief of the Division of Ambulatory Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital in Boston at which time he was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Harvard Medical School.

Levine's major research interests are focused on learning processes and the specific dysfunctions that impede the education of many children and adolescents. He advocates a non-labeling approach, one that pinpoints and manages students' specific breakdown points, strengths and affinities without stigmatizing or oversimplifying them.

Levine was the Medical Director of the Brookline Early Education Project and the Principal Investigator in the Middle Childhood Project, a research program to elucidate problems with academic productivity among older elementary and junior high school students. He is currently conducting Schools Attuned a national project designed to enhance the abilities of teachers to deal with children and adolescents having academic difficulties. Levine is the author of numerous books and articles.

Levine graduated summa cum laude from Brown University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford in England. He later graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his pediatric training at The Children's Hospital in Boston. During his leisure time, Levine is widely known for raising more than 30 varieties of domestic and wild geese, whose behavior and learning he studies and writes about! He also raises (at latest count) 12 donkeys, 10 swans, 10 pheasants, nine peacocks, seven dogs and five cats on Sanctuary Farm. . . . short bio
